The Story Behind the Name: In honor of Marian Dunlap, the grandmother of our boat Captain Curt, the team named our only scalloped hammerhead GM. Her generous donation, in remembrance of her late husband R.J. Dunlap, allowed for the Dunlap Program to be founded. Marian is a strong, but selfless woman who saw an opportunity to expand our understanding of marine ecosystems in order to protect them for generations to come.
Satellite Tagging: GM was carefully tagged with the latest in satellite tag technology providing us with the first opportunity to follow the long-term movements of these threatened species. As you can see, most of her tracks are concentrated around the Marathon Hump, where she was tagged. Please keep checking back frequently to follow GM’s movements, which will be updated every few days as her satellite tag continues to send us real-time tracking data.
Adopt-a-Shark: For information on how you can contribute to our shark conservation research by adopting and tracking your own shark, please visit our Adopt a Shark page.
